Magazine Featured Article Analysis 1

This is a featured article from NME; a lot of the usual features are present here. There is a clearly defined Headline, in the form of a quote. This in a way acts like a pull quote as well, so the reader wants to read the article to know what it means. The Headline is also in a far bolder font than the rest of the article and it takes up the most room on the page, besides the picture, so it has the most impact on the reader. It’s almost as if you have to stop to read what it says.
The only image in this article takes up a whole page so the reader knows that it’s focusing more on what’s being said in the article. It’s possible that the article could either be about an upcoming tour (etc) so little is known about it yet, or the person that the article is about it trying to say something important so there should be more attention towards the text.

There is a kicker just below the headline, with the name of the artist in question highlighted in red, so that it stands out and the reader gets a better idea as to what the article is about. There is a sense of unity here as her name is the same colour as her shirt, making it feel like the whole article compliments itself well.
The drop cap in this article is quite a lot larger than usual. This may be to fit with the headline, as that is also quite large when compared to the actual body text, which is quite small for a magazine. But it is in the column format and where it isn’t justified to make the columns fit better, there are clearly distinguished gutters.
What’s lacking in this article are subheadings, this is probably because they aren’t entirely necessary due to the small size of the article. There also aren’t any sidebars. Again, because of the small size of the article, if there were any sidebars, the body text may be undermined by them and the reader wouldn’t know which the actual article is and which the extra information is.
